“As a family member, nothing can prepare you for the change that occurs after a stroke; one day conversation is full, the next it is hard to say "hello." Sometimes a single sound can make a world of difference. The day my family member was able to say the words "I love you" to us again was nothing short of miraculous; I am so honoured to support other families to reach their own milestones with their loved ones.”                                                - Emma Hives, SLP

ABOUT ME

My name is Emma Hives and I am a speech-language pathologist who was born and raised in North Bay. Speech therapy came into my life when a family member required support for communication and swallowing after suffering a significant stroke. After leaving outpatient services, there was little support available in the community for my family member to continue rehabilitation and treatment for her communication skills. Having seen the benefits of such meaningful treatment firsthand and knowing that there was a need for more services in North Bay, I was encouraged to become a speech therapist to support others in my community.

I went on to earn my Master of Health Sciences degree in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Toronto and returned to North Bay to do just that! I am provincially registered with the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario (CASLPO) and am nationally certified by Speech-Language and Audiology Canada (SAC-OAC).

Through work and volunteering, I have gained experience supporting people with different communication and swallowing needs in various settings, including preschool clinics, school boards, hospitals (rehabilitation, palliative care, complex continuing care, and acute care), outpatient aphasia groups, and at-home rehabilitation for people involved in motor vehicle accidents.

I am passionate about providing meaningful, functional, and personally dedicated speech-language pathology services for clients of all ages.

I founded Tulips Speech Therapy to provide much needed speech-language pathology services to the North Bay community. It was named to honour my family member, who was Dutch, and who never stopped communicating in her own way.
